The US News Media in Global Context
In contrast to news, scholarly articles are written by experts

The chief advantage of getting information from scholarly articles is that each one is written, edited, and reviewed by experts with advanced degrees in the relevant subject. (This is what is meant by the term "peer review." Yet another term for peer-reviewed literature is "refereed.")

Scholars do extensive research -- they may even spend years doing the research for a single article! As part of documenting the validity of this research, scholars provide detailed citations to other scholarly writing. Scholarly, peer-reviewed literature is therefore often considered to be the most credible type of information source.

However, the research and review process takes a long time, so scholarly articles do not directly address events that are occurring in the present or the very recent past.

These are examples of scholarly journals. In the past, it was easy to identify articles from peer-reviewed journals, because you were reading the article in its original context: the printed journal itself. Now, with articles in electronic databases, it's more of a challenge. If you ever need to find peer-reviewed articles, just ask a librarian for help.
