A lot of news is produced by news agencies, also known as news
services or wire services. These agencies have reporters in
many countries and supply news stories to newspapers, websites,
and broadcasting stations. However, most of them are centrally
organized and based in a particular country.
Sometimes websites and library databases provide location information
for news services, and sometimes they do not. So it’s
not always easy to tell where they are based.
A few of the most prominent news agencies are listed on the
right, along with where they are based. If you find an article
from a different news agency, find their website and try to
find location information there.
What is "BBC Monitoring"?
This is a unique service based in Britain that
is unlike many other news services because it does not produce
news on its own, but instead gathers news published or broadcast
around the world. It also translates news articles into English
if they were originally in a different language. Look for a
note at the beginning or the end of the article indicating from
which source the article was taken -- this will help you determine
the country in which it was originally produced.
AllAfrica is a similar type of service, which
concentrates on aggregating news articles from African countries.
