Barbara Ford is Director and Distinguished Professor at the Mortenson Center for International Library Programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana – Champaign. She is a past president of the American Library Association and a member of the Governing Board of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions. Ms. Ford has been involved in another IMLS grant, “Thinking Outside the Borders: Library Leadership in a World Community,” and a number of other grants from government agencies and private foundations.
Shuyong Jiang, project PI, is Chinese Studies Librarian and Cataloging Coordinator at the Asian Library at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She received her Ph.D. in Chinese and M.A. in Information and Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Ms. Jiang is the President of Chinese American Librarians Association Midwest Chapter. As one of the five original members for the CALA 21st Century Librarians Seminar, she has
been actively involved in CALA seminar project and many other professional activities.
Paula Kaufman is the University Librarian and Dean of Libraries at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, a position she has held since 1999, with a break in 2006/07 when she served as the University’s Interim Chief Information Officer. Before joining the faculty at Illinois, she spent eleven years as Dean of Libraries at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Prior to taking that position she served at
the Columbia University Libraries as Acting Vice President, Director of Academic Information Services, Director of Library Services, Acting Head of the East Asian Libraries, and Head of the Business Library. She also has considerable experience in the private sector, at McKinsy and Company and as co-founder and partner of Information for Business.
Beth Sandore was
appointed Associate University Librarian for Information Technology
Planning at the University of Illinois Library at Urbana-Champaign in
2002. As Associate Dean of Libraries, her responsibilities focus on the
Library’s vision for technology programs and services, as
well as creating and evaluating innovative digital library technology.
She received her A.M. from the University of Chicago in 1984, and held
prior appointments at Northwestern University and Illinois Institute of
Technology. She has provided leadership in the areas of technical
services and library systems development and evaluation. Sandore played
a key role in building the Library’s digitization and digital
library programs, including an international online training program
for cultural heritage professionals and a digital preservation program.
She has been awarded research funding from the Institute of Museum and
Library Services (IMLS), the National Science Foundation, the Library
of Congress, and private foundations. She was appointed an NCSA Faculty
Fellow in 2002 to support work on data mining of museum and archives
digital content. She is currently a co-Principal Investigator with John
Unsworth for Illinois’ $2.7 million National Digital
Preservation Partnership supported by the Library of Congress.
Susan Schnuer is the
Associate Director at the Mortenson Center for International Library
Programs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
She has worked with the Center since 1992 and has implemented
professional development programs with colleagues in Haiti, Russia,
Central America, and South Africa. Most recently Susan has been
involved in a project with librarians from East and West Africa and an
IMLS grant: "Thinking Outside the Borders: Library Leadership in a
World Community." Susan is active in the American Library Association
and the International Federation of Library Associations.
Sarah Shreeves has
been the Coordinator for the Illinois Digital Environment for Access to
Learning and Scholarship (IDEALS), the institutional repository at the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), since mid-2005. Her
primary responsibilities are working with faculty and departments to
raise awareness of and get content into IDEALS, to consult with faculty
and departments around scholarly communication issues raised by IDEALS
such as author rights, and to manage the development of services that
support IDEALS. She has spoken and published extensively on metadata
interoperability particularly within the context of the Open Archives
Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. Her research interests lie
in scholarly communication issues related to institutional repositories
and metadata interoperability. She has a BA in Medieval Studies from
Bryn Mawr College, an M.A. in Children’s Literature from
Simmons College, and a M.S. in Library and Information Science from
UIUC.
Robert Slater has an
M.S. in Library and Information Science from the University of Illinois
at Urbana Champaign (UIUC). He is currently the Web
Technologies and Content Coordinator for the UIUC Library and is Chair
of the UIUC Library's Web Content Working Group. He specializes in web
technologies as they relate to library services.
Scott Walter is
Associate University Librarian for Services and Associate Dean of
Libraries at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He holds
faculty appointments at Illinois as Professor of Library Administration
and Professor of Library & Information Science, and is an
Affiliate member of the faculty of the Department of Educational
Organization and Leadership. Scott received his M.A. in
Russian Area Studies from Georgetown University, his M.A. in Education
from American University, his M.L.S. and M.S. in History &
Philosophy of Education from Indiana University, and his Ph.D. in
Higher Education Administration at Washington State University. Scott
has held visiting faculty positions in teacher and administrator
education programs at Indiana State University, Washington State
University, and the University of Kansas, and has held an adjunct
position in the San Jose State University School of Library &
Information Science since 2003.
Karen Wei, project Co-PI, is Head of the
Asian Library, Coordinator of the Area Studies Division, and Professor
of Library Administration at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign. She is responsible for the administration
of the unit and coordination of the public and technical service
activities in the Asian Library. She is a China specialist
and has more than 20 years experience in collection development and
management of Chinese information resources and services. She
is a CALA life member and a recipient of the 2004 CALA President
Recognition Award.
Helen Zhou has
twelve years of professional librarian experience and worked in
technical services division, public services division and the IT unit
in both American and Chinese libraries. She is familiar with various
aspects of the library services and the use of information technologies
in both American and Chinese environments. Ms. Zhou’s
position as the East Asian Information Services Librarian at the
University of Toronto Libraries provided her plenty of opportunities to
work with East Asian information service providers and users through
which Ms. Zhou has built up a strong working knowledge of the Chinese
resources. In addition, Ms. Zhou has managed a number of web projects
and has a very good understanding of web design and
development.
