service in a country ruled by a totalitarian dictatorship, North
Korea. Notice how the article exalts the country's leader, Kim
Jong-il.
North
Korean leader Kim Jong-il's "deep care" for maternity
hospital reported (KCNA News Agency, North Korea, 7/30/2005)
Although the news media in other countries also often report
on leaders uncritically, the crucial difference with totalitarian
governments is that there are no alternative perspectives available
to citizens.
