The US News Media in Global Context

Who brings us the news?

Due to media consolidation, many American newspapers, magazines, wire services, TV and radio stations, cable networks, and Internet portals are now owned by large corporate conglomerates. However, there are still independent and nonprofit sources of news available.

At right are some of the sources of international news that can be accessed locally. Click on any of them to find out who is in charge of the news we get Urbana- Champaign.

The Chicago Tribune is owned by the Tribune Company, a Chicago-based company with revenues of $ 5.5 billion. Through its many subsidiaries, the Tribune Company owns more than 15 newspapers and 26 broadcasting stations throughout the US. The newspaper has overseas correspondents to cover international news, but it also relies on the Associated Press.

The Daily Illini is run by Illini Media Company, a non-profit corporation at UIUC that also operates radio station WPGU (107.1 FM) as well as other UIUC publications. Like most other US newspapers, the Daily Illini subscribes to the Associated Press for their international news.

The News-Gazette is a privately-owned newspaper based in Champaign with annual subscription and advertising sales of $30,000,000. For its international coverage, the News-Gazette subscribes to the Associated Press.

WAND is owned is owned by Block Communications of Toledo, OH, which is a privately held holding company of print and broadcast media. WAND is the NBC affiliate in Champaign-Urbana, which means that it carries the national programming of that network, including its news programs. NBC is owned by NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. Comcast assumed ownership of the company from General Electric in March 2013. Comcast’s revenues for the first quarter of 2014 were over $17 billion.

WCIA is owned by Nexstar Broadcast Group, Inc., based in Irving, Texas, which owns a total of 65 television stations in 36 markets, including WCIA/WCIX in Champaign. WCIA is the CBS affiliate in Champaign-Urbana, which means that it carries the national programming of that network, including its news programs. CBS Corporation’s net revenues top $14 billion.

WICD is owned by Sinclair Broadcast Group. According to the nonprofit Center for Public Integrity, Sinclair reaches nearly 25% of the US television audience with its 62 stations. A recent report from the nonprofit Free Press notes that since 2011, Sinclair has announced deals that will increase its holdings to 162 stations, thus reaching 38.8% of the US television audience. WICD is the ABC affiliate in Champaign-Urbana, which means that it carries the national programming of that network, including its news programs. ABC is owned by the Walt Disney Co., an enormous multinational media corporation with annual revenue of $45 billion. So when you watch ABC news, you are watching Disney.

WILL TV and Radio: WILL AM (580), FM (90.9), and TV are all part of the nonprofit public broadcasting service of the U of I. International news on WILL AM comes from several sources, including the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Public Radio International (PRI), and National Public Radio (NPR). WILL TV is an affiliate of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS), which is a private, non-profit media enterprise that is owned and operated by its member stations, such as WILL.

WEFT (90.1 FM) is an East-Central Illinois community-sponsored public radio station. It broadcasts a range of non-corporate public affairs and news programming, such as Democracy Now! which carries international news.

AOL is an independent company that recently spun off from Time-Warner, a media empire that earns $30 billion in sales each year. AOL has links to news by many Time-Warner-owned companies, including CNN and Time magazine. Its world news is largely from the Associated Press and Reuters. News on AOL is available to subscribers.

CNN, Cable News Network, is owned by Time-Warner, a media empire that grosses a whopping $39.5 billion per year. http://www.cnn.com/

Google is an Internet company with nearly $60 billion in annual revenues. Google News uses computers to crawl a very large number of news Web sites from around the world and organize articles by topic. http://www.news.google.com/

MSNBC is owned by the NBCUniversal News Group. Its name derives from its founders, Microsoft and General Electric’s NBC unit. NBCUniversal’s annual revenues top $23 billion. http://www.msnbc.com/

Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center is affiliated with the Independent Media Center, “a collective of independent media organizations and hundreds of journalists offering grassroots, non-corporate coverage.” The UCIMC website links to IMC websites around the world, which provide international news from a range of sources outside the mainstream media. http://www.ucimc.org/

The Associated Press (AP) is a wire service, providing news articles and photographs to newspapers, websites, and broadcasting stations that subscribe to it. The AP, based in New York, is a privately-owned transnational company with revenues of between $500 million and $999 million.

Reuters is a wire service, providing news articles and photographs to newspapers, websites, and broadcasting stations thatsubscribe to it. Reuters, based in Great Britain, has revenues of over $4 billion.

Time Warner’s holdings (in the US and abroad) include (but are not limited to) HBO, Cartoon Network, CNN.com, Warner Bros. Entertainment, Time Inc., and the Atlanta Braves baseball team.
