Divisions

What We Do

The Area Studies Division is primarily composed of members of the International and Area Studies Library. This unit of the University Library is the campus’ gateway to information and scholarship related to area, international, and global studies, connecting students and scholars to the knowledge crucial to developing global competencies through the study of distinct nations and regions, as well as transnational issues and global concerns. The Library bylaws indicate that the Division is an educational and administrative sub-unit of the larger whole related by common interests and objectives. The goals of the Area Studies Division mirror those of the IAS Library to enhance opportunities for collaboration and coordination among the Library’s area and international studies specialists.

CPS Principles

  • To simplify access to the Library’s services and collections
  • To increase user competence.
  • To increase use of the Library, both onsite and remote.
  • To increase collaboration within and across divisions for improvements in access, service, efficiency, and productivity.
  • To provide stewardship for the Library’s collections in all formats.
  • To maintain core central services to offset the decline in decentralized services … across the board cuts are no longer viable; central service points must be adequately staffed if they are to meet user demands that were previously met elsewhere.

What We Do

While many units in the Library have special collections six units specialize in curating and providing access to special collections materials. These units include:
  1. the Illinois History and Lincoln Collections Library,
  2. the Map Library, the Rare Book and Manuscript Library,
  3. the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music,
  4. the Student Life and Culture Archives and
  5. University Archives.
The materials curated and managed by the Special Collections Division are generally considered unique or rare, are often primary source material, and often need special handling or mediated access. Special Collections Division materials will likely not be able to be checked out but at the same time, using the materials to support your research or satisfy your curiosity will truly be a memorable experience.

What We Do

“Working behind the scenes for the betterment of information endeavors.”
Staff in the Technical Services Division (TSD) are responsible for acquiring, organizing, preserving, and providing access to materials in all formats for the library’s collections in support of the University of Illinois library’s mission to enhance the University’s activities in creating knowledge, preparing students for lives of impact, and addressing critical societal needs.

Member Units

Acquisitions & Cataloging Services

The Acquisitions and Cataloging Services Unit creates and maintains content in all formats and languages for all materials that the Library acquires and publishes. We keep the collections vital and current by licensing, purchasing, describing, and organizing to ensure discovery of and access to the Library resources by our users.

Collection Management Services (CMS)

Collection Management Services – Oak Street Library (CMS-OSL) is responsible for a variety of services within the University Library, including the Gift program; the Last Copy program; departmental transfers to the Oak Street Library; the ingest, retrieval, and management of materials at the Oak Street Library; ILL Scanning at Oak Street; and the management of the Oak Street Library circulation desk. In addition, a growing part of the unit responsibilities is to provide services relating to large-scale collection management, whether they be transfers, retrospective cataloging projects, physical shifts of collections, or some combination of all three.

Preservation, Conservation, and Digitization Services

The Preservation Services Unit exists to provide long-term access to the physical and intellectual contents of the Library’s collections through conservation, preservation and digitization. These programs seek to provide this access with an eye toward maximizing the Library’s investment in collections, services, and staff while continually seeking to improve the services that we provide.
