Final 2014 American Music Month Concert on November 20th

America PrepareThe University’s 2014 American Music Month celebration closes out with Out of Battle We Escape,  a special concert featuring the Hindsley Symphonic Band and Dr. Ashley Jarrell.  This program  will take place at 7:30pm on November 20, 2014 in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts’ Foellinger Great Hall.

Elliot Ziwira wrote in his January, 2014 essay, No Winners in War, Just Corpses, “Inasmuch as battles may be won, winning a war is never possible; and those that actually grace battlefields are not the ones who usually reap any fruits from their toils…war is cruel, brutal and futile.” At the conclusion of World War I the Western alliance enacted harsh treaties and reparation payments on the Ottoman and German Empires to ensure that a lasting peace would come from the twentieth-century’s “war to end all wars.” However, English poet and WWI soldier, Wilfred Owen, better understood “the pity of war” through his personal experiences fighting at the front in 1916 and 1917.

Join the University of Illinois’ Hindsley Symphonic Band and Dr. Jarrell, as they depict the emotional tribulations of war and peace throughout the twentieth century through Joseph Hahn’s Our Boys Across the Sea; Satoshi Yagisawa’s Hymn to the Infinite Sky; Morton Gould’s Memorials; Morten Lauridsen’s O Magnum Mysterium; and Edwin Franko Goldman’s World Peace March.
