As the staff of the Sousa Archives and Center for American Music were adding a new acquisition to the Kenneth Gaburo Papers last week, they came across this very unique 1960s-era photograph of Charles Hamm, Lejaren Hiller, Salvatore Martirano, Herbert Brun, and Kenneth Gaburo standing in the University of Illinois’ Experimental Music Studio which was founded by Hiller in 1958. All of these men were Illinois faculty members who had a profound impact on new and electronic music during the later half of the twentieth century, and remind us that the University of Illinois was America’s leader in the field of electronic and computer music composition.
