Alpha Lambda Delta is a national society that honors academic excellence during a student’s first year in college. Founded as an honorary for freshman women at the University of Illinois in 1924, Alpha Lambda Delta’s purpose is “to encourage superior academic achievement among students in their first year in institutions of higher education, to promote intelligent living and a continued high standard of learning, and to assist women and men in recognizing and developing meaningful goals for their roles in society.”

In accordance with a 1989 agreement, the University of Illinois Archives preserves and makes available for research the archives of Alpha Lambda Delta, 1924 to present. The Alpha Lambda Delta Archives includes awards, calendars, charter, chapter rolls, correspondence, constitutions, handbooks, histories, National Council minutes, National Roster, negatives and photographs, newsletters, pins and insignia, reports, rituals and procedures, and programs concerning Annual National Council meetings, Association of College Honor Societies, chapter petition and installation file, chapter status reports, fellowships and fellowship recipients, finances, The Flame, Executive Directors, history of Alpha Lambda Delta, Maria Leonard, National Association for Women Deans, Administrators, and Counselors, national officers, Order of the Torch, Phi Eta Sigma, senior certificates and book awards, Title IX compliance, workshops, and Anniversary commemorations.
The Archives also holds the records of the Illinois chapter of Alpha Lambda Delta, including correspondence, reports, constitutions, clippings, publicity materials, chapter histories, eligibility, initiation and membership lists, initiation banquet programs, handbooks, and chapter projects.
