The first bibliography of works about Montenegro was published in Italy in 1842. Since that time there have been a handful of other bibliographies, but nothing truly comprehensive until the Yugoslav national bibliography began in 1950. Some of the Yugoslav retrospective bibliographies also cover Montenegro. See the page entitled National Bibliography for Former Yugoslavia for titles that may be relevant to Montenegro. In 1989 the National Library in Cetinje began to produce a retrospective multi-volume set that will cover the entirety of Montenegrin publishing from 1494-1994 which, when completed, should greatly simplify research on publications from Montenegro. Current Montenegrin publications are covered in Bibliografija Jugoslavije, the national bibliography of Former Yugoslavia which is still being published even though it has changed its scope to provide coverage of only Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, and parts of Bosnia and Hercegovina. For further reading on bibliography in Montenegro see the article entitled “Bibliografija” in Enciklopedija Jugoslavije, volume 1 [U of I Library Call Number: International & Area Studies Slavic– Former Yugoslav Reference 914.97 En16]. There is a section devoted just to Montenegro. A good summary of the history of publishing and current publishing practices in Montenegro is Vesna Vuckovic’s article “Publishing in Montenegro” which appeared in Slavic & East European Information Resources, 1:2/3, 2000, a special issue entitled “Publishing in Yugoslavia’s Successor States.” This article also discusses Montenegrin bibliography.
Online Resources
COBISS (Co-operative Online Bibliographic Systems and Services)
COBISS is a union catalog and a regional indexing resource for the Balkan region. It links public, academic, and special libraries in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Kosovo, Montenegro, Macedonia, Serbia and Slovenia. As of April 2020, the COBISS network consisted of 1387 libraries.
Within COBISS, Montenegro’s catalog is called COBISS.cg. Similar to other COBISS union catalogs, you can search for publications (i.e. articles, books, dissertations, conference proceedings, and special collections) in all of the participating libraries through single search interface. This interface supports simple to intermediate to advanced search options. As of April 2020, the COBISS.cg contained records from 45 participating libraries. See the image below for an online record of Crnogorska bibliografija. 1494-1994.
Digitized Montenegrin Bibliography
This project was put together by the National Library of Montenegro. It offers fully digitized access to the Montenegrin Bibliography 1494-1994.
This enabled much simpler use and easier access to this extensive amount of bibliographic information. The realization of this project, which represents an important step in the further development of library and information system and support for the scientific information system in Montenegro, has been financed by the Ministry of Culture.
The interface appears to be a little bit out of date, but the digitized bibliography is browsable or searchable. Later editions of the national bibliography were published in electronic editions and are available through the same project here.
National Library of Montenegro’s Digital Library
The Digital Library of Montenegro offers access to stored digitizations of stored and preserved old and rare books, manuscripts, documents, periodicals, cartographic materials, posters and art, and audio video content. From here, users can browse and access content published in and held at the Montenegro National Library.

The volumes are very well-indexed with access via various indexes such as name, chronological, publisher, and subject indexes. Works published in Montenegro from 1494-1954 are the subject of this bibliography, but comprehensiveness was not the main goal of the bibliographers. They were trying to establish a rough description of more than 400 years of Montenegrin publishing history. Over 3600 items are listed by year of publication. Periodicals are interfiled with books with each issue being repeated each year it was published. This volume has been rendered less useful now that the more comprehensive title listed above has accumulated so many volumes, but since the above bibliography is not yet complete, this work could supplement research for certain years. Search for periodicals under “list,” “casopis,” “glasnik,” etc. No indexes are provided. The work was compiled by scholars at the National Library of Montenegro. See the entry below for a periodical entitled Pastir.

This bibliography has essentially been superseded by Crnogorska bibliografija, 1494-1994 which is annotated above. It includes over 750 citations for books and periodicals from 1945-1958 in classified subject arrangement which is further enhanced by the presence of extensive indexing. There are indexes for author, translator, editor, publisher, printer, chronology, as well as separate name indexes for newspapers and journals. It does have some interesting introductory materials including statistics for Montenegrin publishing from 1945-1958. The compilation was based on what was received by the National Library in Cetinje under the depository laws and examination of the collections of other libraries. See the image below for an entry that appeared under the heading of “History of Law.”
