Preservation Reformatting is not-public facing but our services and workflows allow for the public – that is, campus and Library staff, patrons, researchers, and community members – to easily access the results, whether digital or physical. Below are several access points that showcase the finished product of our services.
Internet Archive
- As a member of the Open Content Alliance, UIUC has provided materials in the public domain to Internet Archive since 2014. As part of a partnership and customized preservation workflow, Internet Archive staff are located inside the Main Library and perform in-house digitization; Library materials never leave the building.
- Internet Archive has digitized over 16,000,000 eBooks and growing, with over 73,000 books from UIUC. Direct access to UIUC’s public domain materials can be found here.
HathiTrust Digital Library
- HathiTrust is a large-scale collaborative repository of digital content that includes books digitized by Google Books, Internet Archive, and other digitization vendors. As a research institution, UIUC can provide materials from its collection that are protected under copyright to be accessed by UIUC students and researchers online.
- While a number of UIUC books protected under copyright have restricted viewing on HathiTrust, specific library employees have access to these documents and can share links with patrons based on different criteria. The process for a book to be digitized, ingested into Hathi Trust, and returned to the shelf can take an average of four months to over a year.

History Philosophy and Newspaper Library
- The History Philosophy and Newspaper Library (HPNL) hosts UIUC’s newspaper and microfilm collections. Due to inherent degradation components in newspapers, HPNL has partnered with Preservation Reformatting to ensure that aging and unique newspaper collections are physically preserved and stored while having new microfilm surrogates; the latter for patrons to access.

UIUC Library Primo Catalog
- Along with a digital surrogate, copyrighted materials that have been reformatted also receive print facsimiles that take the place of the original item in its owning library. The facsimile becomes the new circulating copy that is available to patrons. This type of print-to-print physical reformatting helps maintain a robust collection of all types of materials and ensures that physical access to reformatted texts is available to patrons.
- After reformatting is complete, books can be searched and requested through the library’s Primo Catalog.
