Collection Information
Collection
Everett Helm collection of Latin American sheet music
Location
Sousa Archives and Center for American Music
Provenance
Originally deposited by Helm at Tulane University; purchased for the University of Illinois at suggestion of Prof. Gerald Behague while a School of Music faculty member
When acquired
April 1974
Description
Over 500 items of Brazilian sheet music of the period ca. 1915-1945, many pieces bearing the stamp “Almirante” (probably Henrique F. D. Almirante [b. 1908], Brazilian singer, composer, and scholar active professionally 1930s-1950s. Publications of Casa Napoleao predominate. The collection consists largely of popular piano music or voice and piano editions, but also includes several works for violin as well as a few manuscript items. Includes dance music of the 1920s and 1930s, as well as works connected with Carneval festivities.
According to information from the Collections File, the Helm collection purchase also included approximately 85 works by “recognized Brazilian composers” of the same era, as well as about 50-75 Spanish-American editions (largely Argentinian). Since the number of items in the original four shelf boxes is somewhat less than what is described in the Collections File folder, it is possible that the Spanish-American editions have been separated and are stored elsewhere, and/or that works by recognized Brazilian composers have been cataloged as individual items for the circulating stacks or Special Collections
Arrangement
Some items within the four shelf boxes have been placed in folders according to initial letters of last names of composers.*
*It is assumed that these boxes have been moved into the Sousa Archives–See finding aid below.
