The University of Illinois Library holds one of the largest collections of farm newspapers in the United States, and the History, Philosophy, and Newspaper Library (HPNL) is the destination for using this collection. Since 2006, we have been working to identify the farm newspapers in our collection, to stabilize those most at risk of deterioration, and to reformat the newspapers in our collection that are either unique or of special research interest. We also initiated a project to digitize 19th century and early 20th century farm newspapers, and those newspapers can be explored freely in our digital collection, Farm, Field, and Fireside.
The newspapers that were digitized for Farm, Field, and Fireside represent a tiny fraction of the entire collection (probably less than 1/500th of all the farm newspapers available to researchers here).
