NSF Data Management Plans

Data Management Plans Overview

A Data Management Plan (DMP) here is referred to simply as a “Plan,” is usually a short (normally two-page) document submitted with grant applications to describe the data management practices that will be adopted during a research project

Why is a DMP Important?

The DMP is a mandatory, two-page document that ensures research data is managed effectively and shared responsibly, in alignment with NSF policies. It facilitates:
Data sharing: (Ensuring other researchers can access the data at minimal cost)
Data preservation: (Guaranteeing long-term accessibility of key research outputs)

NSF DMP Templates for Engineering at Illinois

To simplify the process of creating a DMP, we provide tailored downloadable templates for researchers in the Engineering Directorate (ENG) at Illinois: These templates include example text and instructional comments for each required component, designed to assist researchers in constructing compliant and robust DMPs.

Key NSF DMP Requirements

  • Policies for Access and Sharing
  • Specify how data will be shared, while protecting privacy, confidentiality, and intellectual property rights.
  • Policies for Re-Use and Redistribution
  • Define conditions for data reuse and derivative works.
  • Plans for Data Archiving and Preservation
  • Detail how data, samples, and other research outputs will be archived and preserved for long-term access.

Each NSF directorate, including the Engineering Directorate (ENG), has specific guidelines for DMPs. The ENG DMP policy document is available at: https://new.nsf.gov/eng/data-management-plans

How to Use the Templates
Download the template in your preferred format (PDF or DOCX).
Follow the instructional comments provided in brackets [ … ] to customize the text according to your research project.
Ensure that your DMP addresses the  required components outlined above.
