Government Publications in Science and Technology

The University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign provides access to a wealth of government documents
and technical reports, both digitally and in paper at the Oak Street compressed storage facility. We at
Grainger Engineering Library recommend beginning searches for such materials by searching abstracts and indexes if a specific known document is not desired, and by consulting UIUC’s catalog in addition to various online government sources to find known items.

Energy Research Abstracts (ERA)

Government Reports Announcements and Index (GRA&I)

  • Published by the National Technical Information Service (NTIS).
  • Provides citations with abstracts for the scientific and technical reports received by NTIS. Searchable by subject, personal author, corporate author, contract/grant number, and NTIS order/report number. This publication can additionally be accessed through Engineering Village

International Aerospace Abstracts (IAA)

  • Published by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
  • Provides citations with abstracts for literature in the field of aeronautics and space science and technology, including AIAA meeting papers. Searchable by subject, personal author, meeting and report number, and accession number.

Monthly Catalog of United States Government Publications (MoCat)

Scientific and Technical Aerospace Reports (STAR)

Presently, UIUC’s indexes and abstracts for government publications are either available online or held in the Oak Street High Density Storage Facility. These items can be requested using the library’s catalog and then picked up at Oak Street’s service desk.

Government Science Information Gateway

  • Science.gov – This gateway to government science information and research results provides a search of over 60 scientific databases and 200 million pages of science information with just one query, and is a gateway to over 2200 scientific websites.

Department of Defense (DOD)

  • DTIC Technical Reports Collection (TRs) – DTIC provides selected full-text and bibliographic records of unclassified, unlimited technical reports. This site includes reports that have been received and processed since 1985.

Department of Energy (DOE)

  • Office of Scientific and Technical Information – OSTI collects, preserves, and disseminates scientific and technical information emanating from DOE research and development activities. It provides access to science information from the DOE and beyond.
  • Energy Information Administration (EIA) – EIA is an independent statistical and analytical agency within DOE. This site provides a comprehensive source of information relevant to energy resources and reserves, energy production, energy demand, energy technologies, and related financial and statistical information.
  • Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) – ORNL is a multiprogram science and technology laboratory managed for DOE by Lockheed Martin Energy Research Corporation. This site provides selected full-text and bibliographic records of ORNL technical reports.
  • Sandia National Laboratories – A national security laboratory operated for DOE by the Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Company. This site provides selected full-text and bibliographic records of SAND technical reports.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

  • EPA Laws and Regulations – Provides access to specific regulations and legislation pertaining to environmental protection.
  • EPA Publications – Provides access to EPA technical and public information.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)

  • Dynamic Regulatory System (DRS) – DRS is a comprehensive knowledge center that includes all regulatory guidance material from the Office of Aviation Safety.
  • FAA Data & Research – Provides information about how FAA research is done, the resulting data and statistics, and information on funding and grant data.

National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA)

National Technical Information Service (NTIS)

  • FedWorld Information Network – Serves as an online locator service for a comprehensive inventory of information disseminated by the U.S. Government.
  • National Technical Reports Library – Provides bibliographic citations to over 350,000 printed publications and technical reports that NTIS has received from government agencies since 1990. It does NOT provide subject searching or abstracts. Full text is available by logging in using a free account.
  • NTIS via Engineering Village – Allows searching of the NTIS database through Engineering Village.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)

  • NRC Document Collections – Provides index pages for collections of NRC documents, organized by subject category for full-text viewing, such as Commission Papers, NUREG-series publications, Regulatory Guides, Generic Communications, and NRC forms.
