Q prefix – This prefix does not affect the location of the book in Funk ACES Library. If a call number begins with “Q” ignore the “Q.” A book with the call number "Q. 630.1JO" is found at "630.1JO".

Please do not hesitate to ask a member of our staff for assistance locating items!

Recent journal issues (usually less than 1 year old) are shelved in alphabetical order in the “Current Periodicals” row, next to the Reference section on the Second Floor, on the west side of Funk ACES Library.

Bound journal volumes are shelved in call number order in the location specified in the library catalog.  This may be either Funk ACES (shelved on 2nd-4th Floors, check signage for see call number breakdown) or Funk ACES Compact Stacks (4th floor, east side of the building).

Bound journal volumes can be checked out by faculty/staff and graduate students for 2 weeks.

Items with a Q prefix in the call number are more than 28cm tall or more than 25cm wide(the Q stands for quartile).  The Funk ACES Library does not shelve these items separately--they are interfiled with books of 'normal' size.

When looking for an item with a call number that begins with Q., ignore the Q. and look for the numbers following it. For example, you will find  Q. 712.0973 P939 shelved at 712.0973 P939.

Items with an "F" prefix in the call number are items more than 42cm tall or or 35cm wide  (the F stands for folio).

These oversized items are shelved together on the fourth floor, east side, on range number 82 of the compact shelving.

All items with A. B., or C. prefixed call numbers are shelved on the Fourth Floor, east side, in the compact shelving in range number 81.

A prefix is used for bibliographies
B prefix is used for biographies
C prefix is used for congresses

About Our Building

The library is named after the Funk family and its patriarch Isaac Funk. Isaac Funk (1797-1865) was an influential early pioneer, who settled in Illinois in the 1820s. Over the next four decades, he built an agriculture and livestock empire, which was continued and expanded by his descendants. The family was highly regarded in both Illinois agriculture and politics.

In 1986 the Funk family made a generous gift to the University, Eugene D. Funk in reference to the gift said, “We have planted a seed that needs to grow.” This gift from the Funk family with the help of others eventually became the funds used to build the Funk library, which was then named in their honor. For more information on the Funk Family check out A Tree grows in Funks Grove: A History of the Funk-Stubblefield Families of McLean County, Illinois.

The ACES Library, Information and Alumni Center was designed by two separate architecture firms: Phillips Swager Associates (merged with Dewberry in 2004) and Woollen, Molzan & Partners, Inc. (disbanded in 2011).

For further information, see the commemorative book Jewel of the ACES Campus from the library’s dedication ceremony in 2001.  A print copy of the book is available in our Reference Collection. There is also a video.

ACES is the College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences.  When the new library was dedicated in 2001, the name of the library was changed from the ACES Library to the Isaac Funk Family Library (Funk ACES Library, for short).
